Heelis), two letters to Mr Willie Wilson of Herdwick Croft and Herdwick View, Armathwaite, both dated 1943, together with an illustrated cutting from The Yorkshire Post dated 1931 regarding Keswick Show. This is illustrated by Beatrix Potter with the nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle. This comes with the envelope to Mr W. Wilson also dated 1931. The two letters both from Castle Cottage, Sawrey, to Willie Wilson refer to the cost of hiring full time shepherds. "As a business proposition it is not business. The Herdwick industry cannot pay such wages." The letter complains about Yorkshire men spoiling our market by offering much more than the local wages. "I wonder what will happen after the war if prices and subsidies drop - will servants agree to come down?" "I hope the minimum wage might settle the matter." Beatrix Potter goes on to say "I have asked William what does it cost to rear a gimmer hog?". He says "Nothing at all". The saying used to be "Wool pays the rent and the wedder hog pays the gimmer hog". I am wondering which of them pays the wages? (see illustration).
