Lot 984

A fine George I walnut cased astronomical longcase clock by Christopher Pinchbeck circa 1725, eight day striking, the clock has a complicated dial probably the work of Pinchbeck Senior. The chapter ring is about 2 inches smaller than the dial plate to allow room for the five subsidiary dials. The decoration between the dials is of gilt repousse brass sheet. The dial and the arch show the phases of the moon through an opening and its age by a pointer reading across to the outer ring of numbers. It also indicates the times of high tide at thirty seaports, mainly British but also including such places as Lisbon, Callice (Calais) and Hamburg. The upper left hand dial has a rotating centre marked with I to XII twice and a sun and inscribed "Suns Place in y Ecliptick and Southing of 24 Stars". The outer fixed ring has on its inner edge the twelve signs of The Zodiac to which the sun points in turn during its annual path through the heavens. Outside the signs of The Zodiac are the names of the stars such as "Head of Andromeda", "Swans Tail" and "Antares". The Roman numeral which comes opposite the particular star gives its time of southing, that is crossing the meridian at that date. The upper right hand dial also has a rotating centre engraved with a crescent moon and inscribed "This Shews the Sign The Moon Is In". The fixed outer ring has the signs of The Zodiac to which the moon points in turn. The lower left hand dial has a hand which points to the month with its zodiacal sign. The lower right hand dial is marked with the day of the week, each with its planetary sign. The case is veneered with finely figured walnut with the usual herringbone banding and crossbanding. Case height 92.5 ins, dial width 12 ins. PROVENANCE - The clock is featured in "The Longcase Clock" by Tom Robinson, pages 231-234, published by The Antique Collectors Club. The clock has been in its current ownership since purchased in 1952 from the auction sale of the contents of Breton Lodge near Wakefield in the estate of Major G. Phillips JP. We have a copy of the catalogue for this sale. The Christopher Pinchbeck was Lot 95 and realised £230. The catalogue states that "This clock was formerly in the Hardcastle collection and exhibited at Temple Newsam in 1949". The clock was also featured in the Horological Journal December 1950. The clock is sold with a copy insurance replacement valuation by Lyon & Turnbull for £80,000 dated August 2012 (see illustration).
