Major General Sir John Ponsonby KCB CMG DSO (1866-1952), Mameluke sword, the blade etched "John Ponsonby" and with service details from the Guards Brigade 1915 through to Madras District India 1922, with scabbard. Blade Serial No. 03476, length 84 cm. NOTE - Major General Sir John Ponsonby (1866-1952) was a British Army Officer who commanded the 5th Division during World War One. He was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1888, served in Uganda in 1898 and was seconded for service in The Second Boer War in South Africa in 1902. After the war he became General Officer commanding the Madras District of India. He retired in 1928. He lived at Haile Hall near Beckermet (see illustration).

NOTE - Arthur Ponsonby 1st Baron Ponsonby of Shulbrede (1871-1946) was a British politician, writer and social activist. He was Private Secretary to Queen Victoria (see illustration).

Lady Emily Charlotte Mary Ponsonby (1817-1877), her "4th Scrap Book" dated 1852 Hampton Court Palace, including Lieutenant Colonel the Honourable Frederick Ponsonby's Freedom of The City of Kilkenny 1811 press cutting, pen and ink drawings, portrait watercolours by "Lily", card from Earl Spencer from Althorp. NOTE - Lady Emily Ponsonby was born in London in 1817. Her father was John Ponsonby 4th Earl of Bessborough who was the Home Secretary in 1834. Emily served as John Ponsonby's secretary. She also wrote a number of romances telling tales of the upper classes (see illustration).

Military Interest - A George III mahogany apothecary chest, circa 1790-1800, rectangular form, the lid with engraved brass medallion inscribed "A. Dunlop, Surgeon, 38 Regt.", the interior fitted with glass bottles, jars and four tin canisters with ring handles, some bottles with label for chemist "J.H. Pickering, The Victoria Pharmacy, 384 Wick Road, Hackney Wick", all over a lower drawer with apothecary scales and a folding leather wallet containing a surgeon's field kit, the accessories stamped "Overhill, Huish Road S.E.", the case with brass bindings and brass carrying handles, the bottles most likely relabelled circa 1900. Width 36.3 cm, height 21 cm, depth 28.8 cm. NOTE - A. Dunlop, Surgeon, commissioned 2nd August 1796, retired 24th November 1803. The 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot during the Napoleonic Wars saw action in The West Indies and in 1796 took part in the capture of St. Lucia and the following year Trinidad (see illustration).
