A 19th century mahogany microscope slide box, with sunken brass handle and inset ivorine label for "M.Pillischer, 88 New Bond Street, London", containing 19 sliding drawers, the majority housing glass slides with handwritten inscriptions, to include slides by Newton and Co, Ward Preparer, Manchester, with many interesting slides to include two slides titled "Sounding HMS Challenger", hand inscribed 4th and 6th September 1875. (212 slides in total). NOTE: HMS Challenger was the mother vessel of the challenger Expedition of 1872-1876. This was a scientific exercise making many discoveries that laid the foundation of oceanography. The Challenger was ex Royal Navy and greatly modified for scientific tasks to include laboratories for natural history and chemistry. Under the supervision of Charles Wyville Thomson, HMS Challenger travelled 70,000 nautical miles surveying and exploring. This expedition catalogued over 4,000 previously unknown species (see illustration).
